Ersin Tatar responded to the claims of theatre censorship first to the BRT.
Ersin Tatar was a guest on a special program at the BRT and responded to the questions of Levent Kutay.
Tatar explained that “the subject of theatre must not be dragged somewhere else. He continued and said that “if you are a writer under contract to the government, and if a play will take place in the name of the government, then the government will of course look at its contents and give an opinion”.
Tatar explained that a group of artists contracted to the government and Yaşar Ersoy, were working on a project together. He continued by saying – “Since it was connected to the Minister of Education, I think he also had an opinion and I called him and asked for information. This information has yet to reach me. I am not sure how correct it is to criticise this early on. The TRNC is a democratic country and various opinions are presented via various channels. I think we are in an open forum and to exaggerate this subject and to drag it somewhere else would mean dragging it to other channels. What is the aim? To increase the tensions even more? No one here has the problem freedom of expressing themselves. If you are a writer under contract to the government, and if a play will take place in the name of the government, then the government will of course look at its contents and give an opinion. There can be nothing more normal than this. Just because you have the freedom of expression, it does not mean you can sit up there and do whatever it is that you want. I have endless amount of respect for Yaşar Ersoy. He is a very talented individual. Let’s not make this situation even more tense, this would be unfair. This would be unfair to the TRNC”.
