“For the first time, the number of Greek Cypriots who went to the north has surpassed the number of Turkish Cypriots that came to the south”

For the first time ever, since 2003, the number of Greek Cypriots who went to the north has surpassed the number of Turkish Cypriots that came to the south.

According to the statistics in the south of Cyprus, for the first time since the opening of the pass points in 2003, the number of Greek Cypriots who have crossed over to the north has surpassed the number of Turkish Cypriots who have crossed over to the south.

According to the Politis newspapers news under the headline of “the number of Greek Cypriots who have crossed the border has doubled … for the first time since 2003, the number of visitors is higher than that of Turkish Cypriots”, between the months of January-May, the number of Turkish Cypriots to cross the pass points into the south have been 514 thousand 654. The number of Greek Cypriots to cross over to the north have been 800 thousand 608.

If this disposition continues, it is expected that by the end of the year the number of Greek Cypriots that cross the pass points over to the north will surpass the numbers of this past year and will triple the numbers of 2017. The number of Greek Cypriots that have crossed over to the north in the months of April and May has tripled from the numbers of last year during the same time.

The increase of the number of Greek Cypriots that have crossed over to the north, is linked with the increase of the value of the Euro in the face of the Turkish Lira on March 2018 which resulted in the purchasing of more fuel from and the statistics of JCC confirm this.

With the exceptions of the Beyarmudu (Pergamos) and Akyar pass points, in total of 800 thousand 608 Greek Cypriots have crossed to the north and 514 thousand 654 Turkish Cypriots have crossed to the south. If this disposition continues, the number of Greek Cypriots that cross to the north during the month of June, will reach the number of 1 million 10 thousand which was in the whole of 2018, and will reach the number of 1 million 900 by the end of the year therefore doubling the number from 2018 and tripling the numbers from 2017 and 2016.

The following are statistics of the police in the south of the number of vehicles of Greek Cypriots to cross to the north and the number of vehicles of Turkish Cypriots to cross to the south since the year 2015:

2015: 117 thousand 645 GCs (Greek Cypriots), 341 thousand 834 TCs (Turkish Cypriots).

2016: 244 thousand 929 GCs, 413 thousand 208 TCs.

2017: 267 thousand 467 GCs, 435 thousand 882 TCs.

2018: 486 thousand 040 GCs, 417 thousand 269 TCs.

2019 (Between the months of January-May): 419 thousand 288 GCs, 196 thousand 228 TCs.

The main reason for the increase in the number of pass point crosses is the cheapening of fuel due to the exchange difference between the TL-Euro.
